you'll cry

I wrote this poem after feeling betrayed by someone I was dating. At the same time, I was grieving my dad leaving my family. At some point in the poem, I don't know who I'm talking to anymore. The grief I was feeling at the time was so overwhelming; I wanted this piece to feel like it was overflowing.

You’ll cry about it. You’ll cry until your eyes dry out, hot tears like the sidewalk in the summer on the day you crumpled to the ground, trying to remember where you were going and what you were saying and who you were loving and when did you lose them.

You’ll cry until your eyes are too swollen to stay open and your nose is as red as the sun pressing against your eyelids as you lay in the field by the lake where you leaned in to kiss the person who disappeared as quickly as they had arrived, leaving only the ghost of their fingers in your hair for memory.

You’ll cry until the traces of your tears are etched onto your cheeks, winding like the road you visited me on, the road where you dropped the world on me and then drove away, never looking back to see me when I got up and screamed your name, trying to find you in the dark sky, waiting for the sun to come up.
